Wednesday night both of my feet swelled up so badly I could barely walk. They look like I had broken them both, they were that swollen. I had no ankles, swelling went up to mid-calf.
Thursday morning it is a little better, but throughout the day got bad again. I called the dr and made an appt for Friday afternoon.
I am 9 weeks out from a radical hysterectomy. Dr says I have lymphedema, a complication from surgery. He is doing labwork to rule out heart and kidney problems, but is pretty sure it is lymphedema.
He says it is good I got in this early but once you get it there is no cure. I will have to stay on medication and physical therapy to try to reduce the swelling.
I am beyond devastated. He said the surgery must have damaged the lymphatic system and it is a rare side effect from major surgery. The fluid that the system usually drains from your body collects in your limbs instead. It can get bad enough for me to have to wear support hose up to my waist and have pressure treatments on my legs several times a day.
I will let you know how it goes. I am pretty down about it and cannot imagine my feet feeling like this forever. They feel like they are constantly in the stage when they fall asleep and start to wake up.
Oh, and another lovely side effect? I have gained 30 lbs in 6 weeks! Hopefully most of it is water weight...I am so puffy.
