I know I am the overworried mom but that is me. Skylar got her tonsils/adenoids out and her tubes put in her ears yesterday mornng at 9am. She has hardly drank since then. her tongue is swelled a bit and after going back to the ER looks like she may have an allergic reaction to the codeine in her tylenol. They gave her benadryl and home we went. Has anyone else's child close to her age (nearly 3) experience this? How long til she will drink I am scared of dehydration. She is still peeing so I guess that is good but I am WORRIED!

I had mine out at 3 and my mom is a ear nose and throat nurse. The symptoms are common. I don't know if you feel comfortable with it or think it's safe for her, but ice chips is the number one choice of nurses after tonsillectomy. Or try those frozen waterpops. It will help with any pain also. try to give her only soft foods for a few days as well. No sodas or acid contaning fruits or juices.
Even chicken or beefbroth might be a good thing.
My mom used to give me my pain meds 20 minutes before letting me eat or drink to help numb my throat.

Looks like you beat me to it with your post lol.
If she doesn't drink anything tomorrow either call the doctor for advise. I know you can't force her, but this sounds serious.

The pain meds WERE tylenol with codeine. Now that her tongue is swelled they dont want her taking that so I have no choice but regular tylenol for pain. Frown I guess my main worry is how long is TOO long without a fair amount of fluids before I need to get her to the ER? Am I overly worrying since she just had them out yesteday>?

A couple other things.. I have asippy cup full of water right next to her since she usually wakes up half asleep wanting her milk. I also have a cool mist vaporizer right on her hoping it will help keep her mouth moist. It was a scarey experience however the ENT doc said that she REALLY needed the tubes as her ears were filled with fluid and her hearing had to be bad and hsould be good now. I spent an hour after her surgery wiping the blood of her nose and mouth fighting back tears. This has had a very emotional toll on me and my little girl. I know she needed it but I didnt expect it to be so bad.

I would try a open cup . Id bet the sippy will hurt as she has to suck to get anything. Up teh amount of tylenol by 1/4 teaspoon to 1/4 more than shes taking. AS you know no motrin either. Otherwise id call teh ent in the am. They may wantto give her some fluids. But with out vomiting etc she may be ok. I Think a tsp a hour is whats needed to stay hydrated. So if shes doing 3 every 3 hours shes probably ok and or crying tears etc.

Aww! Hugs to you and Skylar both! I have experience with tubes, but not the rest of that. Seems like you've been given a lot of advice.

The only I have is that if you have any worries or concerns tomorrow, get her into the ENT to be checked out since its a Friday. Then they could give you better direction on when or if you need to panic over the weekend. GL! Keep us up to date.

She is crying tears and drooling all over. She has her mouth open and like she doesnt want to swallow her saliva for fear it would hurt. A teaspoon of fluid an hour? That sure doesnt sounds like much. But I can manage that I think by force Frown She wont even let me giver her tylenol. I have to hold her down. Frown Shes resting now but I will try the cup thing and see if it works. Thanks!

Oh, sweetie. I feel your pain. Josh had his tonsils and adenoids out 2 months ago and it was just horrible! He didn't have the allergic reaction you're describing, but he wouldn't drink or eat anything, either. I totally know how frustrating it is, but just keep offering it to her. That's the best you can do. Josh liked it when I crushed up popsicles and fed it to him with a spoon. He also liked the slushies from Sonic. Giving the tylenol 20-30 minutes before eating/drinking is helpful. If I think of anything else, I'll post. But your mother-instinct is the best tool in your box. If you think something's not right, it's best to have it checked out. Good luck!!!!

Oh wow, I think you have been given good advice. I would most definitely call tomorrow though since its a Friday just to see what they have to say. I sure hope Skylar starts feeling better bless her heart. I know when Austin had his T&A surgery they encouraged eating as soon as he was ready and he did eat on our way home, popcorn shrimp and french fries, he didnt have too many problems though. I hate that poor Skylar is having such a rough time.

Thanks girls. She woke up a bit ago and thew up (first time since surgery) some brown and yellow flem ****. Flip side, now she is talking a little and her tongue seems to be less swollen. She put the water cup back in the fridge by herself and grabbed her wiggles cup with strawberry banana v8, her fav, however she just has it setting by her she hasnt touched it. Also I gave her a feverall suppository so I wuold not have to fight her on the liquid tylenol.

it sounds like she is doing a bit better. I am sure it hurts to swallow but hopefully tomorrow she will drink more. You can certainly look for signs of dehydration:dry mouth, no pee, no tears when crying, eyes looking kind of sunken in, poor skin turgor (when you pinch the skin, does it stay tented or bounce back). I would certainly call the dr in the morning if you are worried. Good luck sweetie!
