Swine flu has hit St. Louis Public Schools. The district has just confirmed one case of H1N1 – at Nance Elementary, 8959 Riverview Boulevard, north of Interstate 70.
The school will not be closed, district officials said. No other child reported flu symptoms. The district at first wouldn’t release the school’s name, concerned it would inadvertently identify the child. But with letters going to the parents of all children at the seven-year-old Earl Nance Sr. Elementary today, a spokeswoman later confirmed that the child attended there. For more on the swine flu, region-wide, go HERE. Here’s the full release: St. Louis - On Wednesday, May 20th, after school dismissal, the Office of the Superintendent, as well as the Office of Health Services, became aware of the District’s first confirmed case of H1N1 Influenza (referred to as “swine flu”). The student first became ill with flu-like symptoms on the night of Friday, May 15th. The student has NOT returned to school since that time. Reported symptoms of the H1N1 Influenza include, but are not limited to: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A few more patients than usual have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. At this time, the City of St. Louis Department of Health has recommended that the school remain open because NO other cases of flu-like symptoms have been reported in the school and NO other positive cases of the H1N1 flu virus have been diagnosed. An informative letter from the City of St. Louis Department of Health, as well as a fact sheet, will be sent home today with each student to share with his/her family in the affected school. In addition, to ensure the health of the District’s students, employees and families, the District will continue to work with local, state and national health agencies to monitor and aggressively communicate general information about the illness to ensure that the necessary precautions are taken. If a student, staff, or employee is experiencing or showing flu-like symptoms the District asks that you remain home, notify the District of your absence, and contact a health care provider immediately. For more information please contact the Office of Public Information, 314-345-2367.
