The kids had their 4 year visit (a little late) with the Dr. yesterday. He seems pretty convinced that Mikey shows signs of autism. He referred me to a neurologist to check for a pervasive developmental disorder. That pretty much covers a span of things. Once he is evaluated we will know more. It was a lot of take in. He was talking and talking and talking and honestly there was so much he was saying that I couldn't absorb it all.

At last years visit I brought my concerns to the Dr. ( a different one than I saw yesterday) and he brushed them off. He pretty much had me convinced that he was just "being a toddler" and that I was an overreacting mom. I was pretty certain that something was not right, but after talking with the Dr. last year, I thought I had been overreacting. I am feeling completely guilty now. I wish I had taken him to see another Dr. right away. My gut instinct was that something was not quite right and I let the Dr. convince me otherwise. I feel horrible for not doing something sooner. When I talked to the Dr. yesterday there were so many things that he said were dead on for a child with autism.

I'm freaking out. I'm trying very hard to stay positive. If he does have something wrong, it is not a severe form of it, so for that I can be VERY grateful. But I'm still upset and I feel guilty that I didn't pursue this sooner.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Hugs I am so sorry and I hope the meeting with the neurologist is a good one.

What were the signs that you thought something was not right?

My SIL's twins have autism and she runs an autism radio show every Wed on blogtalk.com.

My cousins son has autism too but it is less severe than the twins.

I am sorry I dont have any advice or personal experience but hang in there...we are here for you!!!

Here are the things that I mentioned to the Dr.

-He's scared of loud noises (in a BIG way)
-Very timid about doing things, especially if there are other people around other than who he is used to
-He rocks side to side in his sleep. He does this almost every night, he sometimes moans along with this. It's not all night long, it normally happens closer to morning*
-He throws HORRIBLE temper fits, sometimes over nothing at all. He will go on for the longest time, then all of a sudden just stop. There is no winding down. It's like he goes from hysterics to perfectly calm in the blink of an eye*
-He tends to obsess over things. You can't really redirect his focus onto something else.*
-Typically dislikes physical contact, unless he initiates it *
-has a very hard time adjusting to change
-He is very weird about getting anything on his hands.*
-Does not do well in groups of people, though he does seem to be doing a little better with this lately
-The Dr. asked if there is any one thing that he seems to really excel at, and when it comes to taking things apart and putting them together, from a young age has been VERY good at things like that.

The ones with the stars are the ones that I first mentioned to the Dr. last year. Because he holds so many of the characteristics, the Dr. was concerned. He said if it was one or two he might not think anything of it. But because of the combo of so many, he thought it was something that needed to be looked into.

((hugs)) Eric's nephew has a sensory disorder and those things you listed describe him to a tee too. Well I am not sure about the rocking side to side in his sleep since I am never around him when he sleeps. He is 5 yrs old I think now. They did some different therapies with him and he improved soooo much from those things. IN all honesty, there are several things on there that describe Ella too. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!!

Very well could be sensory. Sensory intergration or OCD. They both over lap each other. QUinn did alot of what you described when he was younger and still does some of them.

I too have a friend who's daughter has sensory intergration and the things you are saying sound very very similar to what she had and she grew out of it, but was diagnosed a little younger than what Mikey is now.

I would also call the ped and ask for a ref to a Ocupational theropist for a Sensory eval. They are like Physical theropist .

Does he LOVE to be spun or swing lots and fast the faster the better? Quinn kept his hands fisted ALOT and still HATES to get anything on them. Wouldnt paint or play with play dough etc. Will he color or are his fine motor skills lagging? If so id go that route over the Atistic route 1st. A sensory label is very differnet than a autistic label is. Its just as hard to deal with but with loads of theropy can be managed.

If its sensory related just do lots to fill that like the swinging /spinning. Roll him in a rough terry towel and roll him putting lots of preasure on him. Quinn loves fast things. Like when we were on the boat this weekend he stood the whole time so th ewind was blowing against him. It fills that sensory seeking thing in him.

No, he actually doesn't like to swing high or fast, same with spinning. He will color and draw but isn't all that interested in it. He is more interested in how the mechanics of things work. Like if he gets a toy he will sit and inspect every inch of it to see how it works. He is forever taking things apart. He doesn't so much mind the way things FEEL on his hands (like sand or play dough) but gets really freaky if he notices something ON them...like cheese from a dorito,or dirt....stuff like that.
