I definitly want to BF my baby when it is born. I have been reading books about it. One thing I read was preparing your nipples before the baby comes. Is this really nessisary? If it is what did you guys do to prepare?

I honestly didn't do anything and have successfully breastfed three children.

I really only think you have to do anything to your nipples if they are inverted or something.... I could be wrong though!

I did not prepare my nipples for it, I was sore only when she fed for the 1st week or so, and it was more from the letdown and not her sucking.. And I have been at it for over 1 yr. now..

Good Luck!

oh I did put lansinoh on them when they cracked or got sore.. but that was after I had already started nursing and got a few "bad latches". It was just to help them heal and help with the pain.

I didn't do a thing and wouldn't advise anyone else too either. I do use lanolin occassionally and used it about once a day the first couple of weeks. Now it seems like I only need it when she's having a little growth spurt and nursing a lot.

Preparing your nipples before the baby is even born for breastfeeding is an old wives take and can land you with some very sore boobs and possible infection. When the baby is born you deal with anything that may or may not come up. See if you can get a lactation consultant to visit before you even leave the hospital, they will make sure that you are getting the baby latched properly and give you info on what things to watch for. Also check out kellymom.com for tons of info on breastfeeding.

I had to use these when I had Luke:

I always recommend to everyone. They saved my breastfeeding relationship. My nipples were just not big enough!! I wish someone would have told me about these about a month before I gave birth because that's how long it took them to get my nipples to a manageable size for him. I'm actually going to wear the again in a few weeks to kind of "prepare" my nipples again for this baby! Highly recommend them!

I didn't do anything to prepare for breastfeeding and I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have any problems. I don't think I ever needed any lanolin or anything else other than breast pads for leakage. Good luck!

Thanks guys! I know I will have lots more questions when the times comes! I thought it was strange to prepare your nipples before the baby is born. Other than if they are inverted. It is a newer book on BF'ing that I was reading too which makes me surprised.

Becareful as they say nipple stimulation can cause labor. I was given nipple shields at the hospital and my baby DR was very upset as she said they get too much air and it causes a tummy ach.

I had trouble the first few times but once he got the hang of it I have not had problems. The shields I had are nothing like mentioned above mine were huge and very uncomfortable.

I used these also but not for nipple size, i was so sore and my bra just made it worse so i wore these when i needed to keep my bra from rubbing mine. Also when i was sore i wore a nipple shield which helps the baby with latch problems. You can buy the nipple shields at target and they were a life saver.
