Hi everyone. I am BFing Kaylee and I need help. I have seen a lactation specialist in the hospital but I still have many questions. The first is how do I know she is getting enough. It sometimes seems especially in the middle of the night like she is not getting anything at all and she just cries and cries. I had to give in a few times and feed her formula. My milk today seems to be coming in fairly well but she seems to be eating everything I have. I feel like I can't keep up with supply and demand! I am sooooo sore. We had some bad latching and position in the hospital and it feels like my nipples are going to fall off. The one is starting to feel a bit better but the other is still horribly painful. Any suggestions would be helpful. I will post more later. I hear her stiring and will want to eat again.

She is getting enough for right now, she eats all she needs then stops so you supply and demand is learning what it needs to be for her, when she starts eating more you will produce more. For the pain try some Lansinoh its safe for you and the baby and it really helps to heal them and also, after you nurse squirt a little milk out and rub it on your nipple that will help it to heal faster. You will know she is getting enough if she is having wet and dirty diapers. At night, sometimes babys will cluster feed and they will want to eat every 20-30 minutes and that may be what she is doing. Good luck let us know if you have more questions!

Thanks Lauren, I have the Lansinoh all ready. It does help some. I must still be having latching problems. My nipples look worse today then have been. They are really cracked and scabby. I pumped some this morning to maybe get some milk for her without her tearing me up. They feel like they are on fire. I have ice/heat packs too.

Kat it will get easier. Your nipples should be getting used to it. My only other suggestion to add to Lauren's would be to make sure YOU are eating and drinking enough. You not eating or drinking enough will cause supply issues, and so will stress. Good luck and a BIG CONGRATS on breastfeeding!
With my son I dried up within 2 weeks because I was not taking care of me and because of stress. I will add that he was in the hospital for the first 25 days of his life. |

Thanks guys. I am starting to notice that they are feeling better today. It isn't as painful and they are looking better. The one still hurts some but not so bad.
